About Us

We have lived aboard our sail and powerboats in Florida, the Caribbean and on the Chesapeake for some thirteen years, during which time we had fourteen (count 'em, 14!) dinghies. All had merits, all had drawbacks, but we learned that there are few small craft readily available that perform well AND allow the user to enjoy the pleasure that being out in a boat that's 'right' can bring.

We believe that wholesome and useful small boats are a neglected field in American boating, and we therefore decided to offer some boats that, in our opinion, fill that void. Our goal is to help you, the home builder, build and enjoy a boat that is difficult or impossible to find in today’s commercial market.

The boats that you will find at Kent Island Boat Works are attractive boats with classic styling, and yet they are designed from the bottom up to be assembled and finished by first-time boat builders. I think one of the most daunting prospects that most people imagine (other than a tax audit, of course) is building a boat. It seems so complicated: all those curves, and what if something goes wrong? Well, we've addressed just those concerns, learning from our own experience over the years. Our boats go together a piece at a time, and those pieces are already cut out for you; follow our step-by-step instructions, and you'll be amazed at how rapidly your boat comes together.
